How To Order

Iolite

Sometime called water sapphire, because of its rich sapphire blue color. It is extremely trichroic and from various sides will be blue, yellow or colorless. At the hardness of 7 to 7.5 this stone is nicely suited for jewelry.

Picture of Stone M-448B-IOLI: The Kaleidoscope cut is one of my favorites and really brings out the rich color and sparkle of this stone. The color is a nice deep blue violet. The clarity is good. The Iolite tend to be less flashy then some gems but are rather regal in nature. Barb is the cutter. This one is 1.14 cts and is 9.8 X 6.4 mm. $97.50

Picture of Stone M-449B-IOLI: This Iolite gem is cut in a round standard brilliant cut. It is the same rich blue violet as the stone above. Barb is the cutter. This one is 1.18 cts and 6.5 mm.$97.50

Picture of Stone M-556-IOLI: Iolite from Orissa, India. This one is mostly deep violet, but does show some reflections of the amber axis of the stone for some interesting highlights. This one was cut by John at 4.9 mm, .45 cts, in a round brilliant variation. A great item for mounting in jewelry at just $ 45.00

Picture of Stone M-585-IOLI: Iolite-This one was faceted in a trilliant variation by John. It does have some of the typical iolite inclusions but they do not detract from the deep violet highlights of this stone. This one is a respectable 11.5 mm, 3.86 cts. $ 243.00

Moldavite

Moldavite is one of the Tektites, a glass-like material that is of meteorite-impact or celestial origin. Moldavites are found in Czechoslovakia they tend to be deep green but can be lighter shades of green as well. Hardness is 5.5. Should be worn in protective settings. These make unique conversational jewelry pieces.

Picture of Stone M-469B-MOLD: This one is faceted in a custom cut with bars across the top instead of the traditional table. It is a hard-to-find size- unusually large at 26.5 x 15.3 mm, 22.02 ct. Cut by Barb. $ $412.50

Picture of Stone M-523-MOLD: This one is cut by John in a special cut that does not sparkle in the true sense of the word, but helps bring out the color in dark materials such as Moldavite. It does have the usual bubbles common to this material. This is a round cut, 11.1 mm, 4.33 cts that really shows off the forest green color of this stone. $ 150.00

Obsidian

Volcanic Glass; the dark brown/black nodules from the US Southwest are often referred to as "Apache Tears"- Makes a fine and interesting gem.

The following pieces were sold to us as obsidian from China. Their SG and RI are consistent with natural glass, and I have consulted with other gemologists on these: the consensus is that they are almost "too clean to be natural", but there is every other indication that they are natural, which means they fit a very narrow range of physical characteristics common to natural glass that is very difficult to duplicate with manufactured glass. The GIA does have record of blue obsidian, so we have found no reason to dispute the claim that they are natural obsidian.

Picture of Stone M-599-OBSI: Blue/Green Obsidian- This is one of John's designs called Jennifer2 that is 16.0 mm, and weighs 12.71 cts, $ 239.00

Mexican Fire Opal

This is the type of opal that is transparent and makes nice faceted gems. Opal is 5 to 6 1/2 on the hardness scale, which makes it less desirable for rings unless it is in a well protected setting.

Picture of Stone O-510B-CONT: Faceted Contra Luz Opal from Mexico- Contra Luz is an Opal that shows play of color under transmitted light. The stone is orange/yellow, and has an interesting display of reflection patterns. This one is especially great as a night time stone- it looks great under incandescent light. You won't find this gem very often and this one is spectacular! It is an octagon cut 9.2 mm and 2.50 cts. ONLY $ 187.50

Lightning Ridge -Jelly Opal

Picture of Stone O-406B-JELL: If you want something a bit different and with some unique character then you might like this piece from Lightning Ridge. The cut is a heart shape, of the cream color gem with the violet opalescences. The gem is relatively clean except for the dark inclusion floating at the notch at the top of the heart. Could it be some prehistoric plant material that got trapped there? The cut is by Barb. 11.5 X 10.9 mm and 3.96 cts. $420.00

Picture of Stone O-504B-JELL: This piece of Lightning Ridge opal is a freeform shape It has some of the color play and is a nice clean gem. Back ground color is a cream to yellow color. Cut by Barb. It is 7.5 X 6.2 mm and .93 cts. $102.00

Petalite

Petalite: A rare colorless to pink gem with a hardness of 6 to 6.5. Could be used for Pendants and earrings, and in rings that have a protective setting. These particular gems come from Brazil. Great collector stones, it is unusual to find a cut stone of 3 or more carats. These are all very clean stones. John Sinkankas states "colorless gems of small size, rarely available; sizes usually up to 3 carats; white inclusions and small cracks commonly present."

Picture of Stone R-403B-PETA: Since John cut one I had to try for myself. This Petalite is a great stone ...sparkles plenty. Should be a great pendant piece. This one is an oval 16.8 X 13.2 mm and 13.10 ct. Keep in mind it is rare to find this stone in these sizes without inclusions. Cut by Barb $390.50
