ODBC / ODBCINST ERROR MESSAGES The second message is the result of what the first message reported. This can happen on Win3.1 and Win95. ODBC and ODBCINST are DLLs that work in managing databases. So far, the few times these errors have been reported to us were because of other software (pre-existing) that altered the settings of the DLLs. The fix is relatively easy: compare your INI files to these INI files- here is what DVue2 sets my machine to: ****** ODBC.INI ****** [ODBC Data Sources] dBASEFile=Q+E ML dBASEFile (*.dbf) [dBASEFile] Driver=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QMDBF03.DLL Locking=RECORD Database=C:\DVUE2\ <= * this line should indicate where YOUR DVue2 program files are stored * ****** ODBCINST.INI ****** [Q+E ML dBASEFile (*.dbf)] Driver=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QMDBF03.DLL Setup=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QMDBF03.DLL [ODBC Drivers] Q+E ML dBASEFile (*.dbf)=Installed If your files are different, and you are NOT absolutely sure that no other program on your machine is using the settings in these INI files, make backup copies of the current files. (Use notepad, open them one at a time, and rename it... something like "odbc.txt" would be easy to remember) You can cut, paste, and save the above as the new INI files (Edit odbc.ini to point to where your copy of DVue2 is on your hard drive!) or you can erase them and reload the DVue2 program, and then the 4 update files. One person reported success by just erasing both INI files, then restarting windows. Another version of this theme happened to two of us: some trial version of a program somehow set a time limit to how long these DLLs could be used. Loading DVue2 gave an instant "you no longer have permission to use this program unless you purchase a license..." type of error message. Same situation, different message, same fix. Under Win98, one person reported that the newer "odbc.dll" and "odbcinst.dll" found in the "c:\windows\system" directory caused these error messages; replacing them with the origional versions (expanded from the DVue setup disk) resolved the problem, and did not seem to affect any other programs. Try this ONLY after correcting the ".ini" files! If you are going to try this, I recommend you make a copy of your current "odbc" and "odbcinst" .dlls in a subdirectory (like "dll_copy") so you can reload them if necessary; check the file dates to be sure yours are newer than the 1993 versions that are on the Datavue disks. For those not familiar with expanding files, I have placed these on the web page in a zip file for download. John Franke, April 2000
